What the Heck is Indie, Anyway

The terms “indie”, “indy”, and “independent” are thrown around a lot these days, but what exactly does it mean? Well, by definition, “independent” businesses are those which are privately-owned. Basically that means those who are self-employed (sole proprietorship) and small businesses who do not trade in the financial market. Nine times out of 10, if you own your own business and you’re reading this blog, you’re likely an independent business.

Another way the term indie is widely used but not in the traditional way, is to describe a business that is one of a kind or the opposite of a large corporation. In this sense, it’s used for more social commentary. It has become somewhat synonymous with the word “alternative”.

So there you have it. Not so complicated, right?
